How to Keep AI Characters Consistent
Character consistency comes from reducing uncontrolled variation. The goal is not one magical prompt; it is a repeatable identity system used across references, shots, performances, and revisions.
Create a character identity sheet
Record stable features such as age range, face shape, hair, eyes, wardrobe, accessories, posture, and emotional baseline. Generate front, profile, three-quarter, full-body, and expression references in the same lighting.
Separate identity from the shot
Keep the character identity language stable while changing only the action, framing, environment, and camera movement. Rewriting the person from scratch in every prompt invites drift.
Control wardrobe and story time
Label every scene with the correct costume, condition, location, and time of day. A continuity table prevents accidental changes that a viewer interprets as mistakes rather than creative variation.
Edit around unavoidable drift
Use shorter shots, cutaways, silhouettes, over-the-shoulder framing, inserts, and motivated lighting when a generation is strong but imperfect. Continuity is partly produced in the edit, not only inside the model.
